Day 87 - Emergency!, Squad 51, The Boss and Au Lac.

May 4, 2013        238 lbs

What a great day. Still under 240 lbs and I got to see somethings in person, I never thought I would. I grew up during the 70's and one of my favorite shows was Emergency!

I loved the show and couldn't wait to watch the new episode each week. Part of the reason, I think was because one of the lead actors, Randolph Mantooth, looked kind of like my dad who had split with my mom when I was young. Also, my dad was a volunteer firefighter. I knew this because we had intermittent contact when I was growing up. I even got to spend a few weeks with him as a kid. For whatever reason though, my dad didn't want to be more a part of my life. I have carried a persistent feeling of not being good enough or not being wanted I think, ever since. Back to today!

Recently, episodes of the show have returned to syndication on METV and I have been watching them all! I ended up doing a search and found that on the first Saturday of each month, the Los Angeles County Fire Museum has an open house from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Here is why its cool, they have the original rescue truck, Squad 51, at the museum!

The truck was as much a part of the show as the cast in my opinion.

They also had the fire engine used in the series.

Here is a little factoid. A fire engine, is the pump vehicle. A fire truck is the ladder vehicle. Although now they are combined often.

The museum has a bunch of old fire vehicles and is very much worth a visit to see these important pieces of history.

I even got permission to post a picture of The Boss! This required a formal written request in triplicate! World, this is The Boss. (The one in the hat.)

I asked the tour guide Mike, how close the actual firehouse used for the shows exterior shots and found out it was only ten miles away!

This is the L.A. County Fire Station #127 in Carson, CA. They have an open house on May 11. I may have to stop in for that as well!

I kept expecting the firemen to come outside and shoo me away. They probably see fans all the time though.

After visiting the Firehouse and the museum, we went to eat at a popular raw food restaurant in Fountain Valley called Au Lac. The food was incredible!

Well, that's it for now. Gotta get up early and help some friends swim. Until tomorrow my friends.
